Mini Accordion Photo Card

Thanks to Author / Artist - Mary Estrella

Materials:

  • 12x12 sheet of cardstock (1 sheet makes 3)

  • 2 – 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 squares of lightweight chipboard for each accordion (*free from shirt-boxes, cereal boxes, the backs of paper pads, or use restaurant coasters!)

  • embellishments such as decorative paper, ribbon, stickers, eyelets, stamps, ink, ephemera (tags, labels, bottle caps, etc)

  • and, of course, photos!

    Tools:

  • 12” paper trimmer

  • adhesive runner

  • scoring tool, bone folder or embossing stylus

  • corner rounder (optional)

  • eyelet setting tool (optional)

  • sandpaper (optional)

1. Cut a 3 1/2” strip from the sheet of cardstock. *
2. Using the trimmer slot as a guide, and making all measurements from the same edge, score the strip with the stylus, embossing tool or bone folder at 3/4”, then 4 1/4”, 7 3/4” and lastly, 11 1/4”.
3. Fold the scored lines in opposite directions to create the accordion.
4. At this point, if you have a corner rounder, punch the corners two layers at a time as you fold the accordion into one 3 1/2” square.
5. Cut chipboard into 3 1/2” squares and round the corners if necessary.
6. Using adhesive runner, glue the chipboard “covers” to the tabbed ends of the accordion, lining up the corners and edges.
7. Cut decorative paper (4 pieces) to the same dimensions as the chipboard and adhere to the front and back of both covers – if you’re using eyelets and ribbon as a closure, set two eyelets into the back cover after the outside paper has been applied, but before the inside paper has been applied. Once your eyelets are in place, thread both ends of ribbon through from the wrong side, adhering it with a dot of adhesive between the eyelets. Cover with your decorative paper. This leaves both ends of the ribbon hanging neatly from the back and you can tie the accordion closed at the front.
8. At this point, my edges are never perfect, so I take some fine sandpaper and distress the front and back covers along the edges. I also use distressing ink along the edges.
9. Add photos and decorate! Leave any bulky embellishments for the front cover so that the accordion will fold nicely.

*The 3 1/2 inch size is an economical use of 12x12 paper, but once you’ve got the technique figured out, you can make any size and shape you want! See next.

Adjustments to make a rectangular accordion album

5 1/4” wide, 3 1/2 “ high, can hold 10-3x5 photos*

For one album:
1. Cut your 12x12” paper into 3, 3 1/2” strips.
2. Follow scoring instructions for mini accordion, except score each at 3/4”, 6” and 11 1/4”
3. Fold each in half, then fold the tabs in the opposite direction.
4. Lay them on their sides and fit together the tabs to create one long zig-zag and adhere. You may wish to use all the tabs; you may wish to remove one
from each joint, depending on the thickness of your paper.

*For this size album, with it’s overlapping tabs, I will usually cover the entire accordion with decorative paper to hide the seams. Because of this, I don’t always use chipboard covers; instead I trim off the front and back tabs and rely on the layers of paper to add the stiffness required to display the album.
